Ego Malfunction is everything the band’s name suggests: delivering the Anglo-Balkan pulse of modern and eclectic funk-rock-soul while creating a unique vibration of sound; malfunking.
Ego Malfunction consists of Sasha (vocal), RR (guitar), Thierno Diallo (bass) and Mirsi (drums). Taking a new soul revolution to heart — I talked to Ego Malfunction’s guitarist Robert about the band’s newest album Seed From Chaff and the history of the band.
What is Ego Malfunction?
Ego Malfunction is an Slovenian alternative rock band formed in 1999, in Ljubljana, London. Which plays a fusion of rock, punk, funk, soul, and other musical styles — Distinctive and eclectic, 100% soul. A classical quartet with an un-classical approach.
Tell me a little history of the band?
We started as a 5 piece alternative rock band with Gary Franklin on vocal. In that period we released 3 albums, and toured. Franklin was fired in 2004, due to his erratic behavior during sessions and at shows. Gary was replaced in 2005, with female our singer Sasha. This new line up returned to the studio to record Seed From Chaff. The New line up renewed our creativity, and enlivening the recording process.
Ego Malfunction is a reflection of today’s modern man.
Remembering back to Ego Malfunction’s first time on stage, what comes to mind?
The first performance was at some small club to a crowd of approximately thirty people. Innocent, confusing and very energetic. FUN!
What has been your biggest triumph as Ego Malfunction? Greatest challenge?
For Ego Malfunction every performance, and new fan is our biggest triumph. And the most important thing is that we built our own unique style. Greatest challenge was during our show at the state prison (grins). By the way — it was excellent.
If the whole world were listening, what would you play? And why?
Definitely our new album Seed From Chaff. Because we have to separate the good from the bad.
What do you want fans to get from Ego Malfunction’s music?
A strong message; be yourself, use your brains and free yourself from greed.
What is your favorite Ego Malfunction song to perform live? Why?
Uh — there is to many songs on my mind right now. Bullet gun. Teacher. Its all about how I feel at that moment.
Who or what inspired you to pick up your first instrument and how old were you?
Some older fellas. In my eyes every musician was something special. An alien.
I think that I was 13 years old when I started as a drummer. At the time everyone was guitarist and the only free place was for a drummer.
If you could, is there a band or artist that you could recommend (Who readers may not know about, but you think they should.) people listen too?
Uh — that is so hard to answer. To many excellent bands. Open eyes for a different view, that is my principle. There is only one type of music and that is GOOD MUSIC. Rest is ZERO.
Make up your own question and answer it here. Something you feel the fans will want to know that I did not ask you?
To be or not to be? It sounds familiar (winks). To be, Ego Malfunction tribe.
This is your chance to promote your CDs, bands, tours, websites & gear?
Check out our stuff (facebook, myspace, youtube) listen and if you like it spread your voice about it. For more (cds, merchandise) feel free to contact us.
What would you like to say to world fans?
Support good music! Not only music but every little positive thing in your life. No guts, no glory. Much respect and power to the people.
I would like to thank Ego Malfunction and RR (Robert), for their participation in this interview.
