The Beaches

Out of the disbandment of The Jerry Lee Phantom, THE BEACHES were formed in 2006. THE BEACHES’ sound is a genre-bending and eclectic-blending of Rock, Disco, New Wave, Reggae, Punk and Dance music.

With each new release, THE BEACHES continue to polish their songs, while defying being pigeoned holed in their inspiration. Wanting to take listeners where “the world is a neverending summer.” I talked with THE BEACHES’s vocalist and guitarist Hisashi the Kid about the origins of the band’s name, among other things.

Please introduce yourselves.
This is Hisashi the Kid; I do vocals and guitar for The Beaches.

Who are The Beaches and what instruments and brands do they play?
Hisashi the Kid on Vocals, guitar
r.u.ko on Keyboards
TOMOTOMO club on Bass
dij on Drums

The name The Beaches is very unique, could you tell me how it came to be?
Hisashi the Kid: Reason #1: We asked ourselves, “what’s the coolest band name in the world?” And all agreed that it had to be “Peaches.” We took that and switched out one letter. So surely the second coolest name in world is “The Beaches.”
Reason #2: “The Beatles” and “The Beaches” differ only by two letters, so they’re pretty close right? We felt that it might lend a little magic to our music.
Reason #3: Cause’ we love the Beach Boys. Including the fact that they’re not surfers.

Who or what inspired you to pick up your first instrument and how old were you?
Hisashi the Kid: Because, we fell in love with punk rock! I was around 14 when I picked up the guitar.

Remembering back to your first time in front of a live audience, what comes to mind?
Hisashi the Kid: The garage of somebody’s house.

What has been your biggest triumph as a band? Greatest challenge?
Hisashi the Kid: We still haven’t had a success. Our greatest challenge was getting this band started, and all the music we’ve made.

If the whole world were listening, what would you play? Why?
Hisashi the Kid: “Sunset Sunrise,” for us it’s our beginning song and our ending song.

What is your favorite song to perform live? Why?
Hisashi the Kid: The songs off our new album.

If you would, recommend a band or artist our readers may not know about, but you think they should?
Hisashi the Kid: I can’t write them all down. I think everyone should try listening to some of every genre. These days I listen to Afrikan Boy sometimes.

What you like to say to world fans?
Hisashi the Kid: The world is a neverending summer. We have our dance music for living through one shitty day after the other.

I would like to thank THE BEACHES and especially Hisashi the Kid for his participation in this interview.
